Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
If there is one thing I can compare Geometry Wars to, it is
crack. This game is a highly addictive arcade game from the people that have
brought us the Project Gotham Racing series, Bizarre Creations. This game is
one of the most popular titles on the Xbox Live Arcade, and when you start
playing, you know why. PGR 2 and 3 have offered Geometry Wars titles in the
games, and they were very fun, so why not make an entire arcade title complete
with achievements and scoreboards, and that is what they did.
This game involves two gameplay modes, Retro and Evolved. Retro
would basically be Geometry Wars 1, and Evolved would be Geometry Wars 2. The concept of the game is similar to
Asteroids as in how you are a little space ship, and have to stay alive by
using your weapons and maneuverability. Retro is the original title, still very
fun with plenty of space shooting action. This game is very fun and fast paced
as you progress through the waves of enemies. This is not the most fun game
mode though. Evolved is the ultimate version of Geometry Wars. This mode
includes crazy visual effects and sounds to create an extremely fun and
addictive arcade experience. The game isn’t what you would expect to find
yourself using most of your time on your Xbox 360 for, but it is just so much
fun.
At times, you will find the screen filled with a variety of
different colored and shaped enemies which each have their own type of behavior.
They range from the ever annoying pink squares, which when destroyed, spawn two
smaller squares, to the powerful black hole. I was not enjoying this game as
much at the start, because I couldn’t even get a single achievement. Once my
friend informed me that the black holes were destructible, I was on a new
mission with this game.
The game includes its share of 200 achievement points like
all XBLA titles, and range from high score achievements all the way to an achievement
for surviving a full minute without using weapons. The game allows you to use
your ships main weapon, or a special bomb. The bomb clears the entire screen,
but you are limited to how many you have, and you earn more as you gain more
points. The weapons are similar, but you have unlimited ammunition.
To make this a great title to play, the controls have to be
simple, and that they are. The left thumbstick controls your movement, the
right thumbstick controls your ships weapons, and the triggers can be used to
utilize a bomb. It can’t really get simpler than that. This is a very unique,
fast pace gameplay experience. Bizarre Creations has release one of the most
fun and addictive titles available on the XBLA, and you might actually find
yourself playing this game more than a regular Xbox 360 title.
